Terabit Communication Research

Research is underway to increase the data throughput for existing optical fiber long haul communication to 400Gbps, 1 Tbps and beyond.

There are three parameters available to maximize the data rate: the symbol rate, the number of carriers and the constellation size of the applied complex modulation format; as shown in the picture below.

Requirements for terabit data transmission

Choosing the right parameter set may be a challenge. For achieving the research breakthrough, higher performance instrumentation with low noise floors, high effective number of bits and tight channel synchronization is needed.
